Advantages of Gynaecomastia.

Gynaecomastia is a medical term meaning male breast enlargement. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, Vaser liposuction or open male breast surgery can be very helpful. The procedures remove fatty tissue and, in the case of open surgery, glandular tissue too from the breasts, and in extreme cases, excess skin.

Gynaecomastia Procedure.

Male breast reduction surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia. The breast is made up of two main components, glandular tissue (firm and dense) and fatty tissue (soft). The ratio of glandular to fatty tissue in any breast varies from individual to individual and in gynaecomastia, there may be an excess of both. If there is predominantly a diffuse fatty enlargement of the breast, liposuction is the usual treatment. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of breast enlargement, it may need to be cut out with a scalpel. This will leave a scar, usually around the nipple edge. This excision can be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. Major reductions that involve the removal of a significant amount of tissue and skin may require larger incisions that result in more obvious scars.

Gynaecomastia Aftercare.

Following male gynaecomastia repair, you will need to keep your chest well supported. We recommend you wear a surgical-grade chest compression garment for at least 1-3 weeks. Your dressings will be removed approximately 7-10 days after your surgery. The surgeon who performed your surgery will see you after 6 weeks for a follow-up assessment. You must attend all necessary post-operative appointments. It is recommended that you take 1-2 weeks off work and avoid physical contact sports for six weeks.

faq

Ideal candidates for male breast reduction are males who have enlarged breasts and feel self-conscious about the appearance of their breasts.

Following open surgery the chest is swollen and bruised for a while and it can be difficult to assess the full effect of the operation. To help reduce swelling, patients are often instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for up to six weeks. Your wound will be checked around 7-10 days after your surgery. The surgeon who performed your surgery will see you after 6 weeks for a follow- up assessment and as often as required until you are fully recovered. It is vital that you attend all necessary post-operative appointments. It is advisable to refrain from exercise for about three weeks and, in general, it takes about six weeks before one can return to completely normal activities. Liposuction is the usual treatment if there is predominantly a diffuse fatty enlargement of the breast.

If the skin is good and elastic Vaser liposuction is a good minimally invasive treatment. Many patients prefer it as an alternative to open surgery as it is a key hole technique with a quicker recovery and good results. Where there is a large amount of glandular tissue or an excess amount of skin an open surgical technique is preferred.
