Personalised contouring is how Contoura Medical builds a body contouring plan around you: consultation, ultrasound assessment, measurements, choosing the procedure, staging, anaesthetic choice and aftercare. Dr Edwin Anthony leads every step at Langham Hospital, Marylebone, London.

What a personalised plan means

Two people can ask for the same thing, a flatter stomach, and need quite different treatment. One has soft fat under firm skin. Another has fat around the organs that no liposuction can reach. A third has loose skin that will not shrink back on its own. A plan built around the procedure rather than the person fails all three.

Body contouring at Contoura Medical is surgery, even when it is done under local anaesthetic, and it is not a weight-loss treatment. The NHS makes the same point: liposuction suits people who are not overweight, with firm, elastic skin. The planning below is how we check that honestly.

The steps, in order

  1. Consultation. A video consultation (£85) is useful for a first conversation. An in-clinic consultation (£125) includes examination. The advanced consultation with ultrasound (£295) adds a scan of the areas of concern.
  2. History. Weight history, including any GLP-1 medicines such as Mounjaro, pregnancies, previous surgery, medicines, smoking and general health.
  3. Examination and measurements. Skin quality, pinch thickness, muscle tone, symmetry and circumference measurements.
  4. Standardised photographs. Taken in set positions and lighting so later comparisons are fair.
  5. Written plan and quote. The procedure, areas, anaesthetic and staging, confirmed in writing.
  6. Pre-operative checks. Blood tests and MRSA screening where needed, and a nurse assessment.

Why the ultrasound assessment matters

Examination alone can mislead. Ultrasound shows how thick the fat layer under the skin really is, where it is uneven, and how much of a stomach is fat under the skin compared with fat around the organs, which liposuction cannot remove. It can also show a gap between the stomach muscles or a small hernia near the navel, which changes the plan.

For more complex cases, such as lipoedema, revision after earlier liposuction or high-definition work, the advanced consultation with ultrasound is usually the sensible starting point.

The options are described in our VASER liposuction overview and skin tightening guide. Where heavy loose skin needs removing, surgical excision is discussed and a referral arranged.

Staging and anaesthetic choice

Doing everything at once is not always wise. A large study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal of 31,010 liposuction procedures found a major complication rate of 0.7% when liposuction was done alone, but a risk 4.81 times higher when it was combined with other operations. That is one reason we may suggest two stages rather than one long session.

  • Local anaesthetic: you stay awake and comfortable. Suits Micro Lipo and Vaser Lipo to a limited number of areas.
  • IV sedation with local anaesthetic: you are deeply relaxed without a general anaesthetic. Suits Vaser 4D Lipo and larger combined plans. Sedation is given by an anaesthetist.
  • Staging: spacing areas over two sessions can reduce the total volume removed at once and the time spent in theatre.

Aftercare and review

  • Day 1: home the same day; fluid leakage from small entry points is normal
  • Days 2 to 3: gentle walking and light activity
  • Weeks 1 to 2: most people are back to desk work within about 5 to 7 days after larger procedures
  • Weeks 4 to 6: compression garments worn throughout, then gradual return to full exercise
  • Week 12 onwards: the shape is largely visible, with swelling continuing to settle for some months

Review appointments repeat the photographs and measurements, so progress is compared like with like. The NHS notes that swelling can last up to 6 months, so final judgements are not made early.

Frequently asked questions

What happens at a body contouring consultation?

Dr Edwin Anthony takes a full history, including weight changes, pregnancies, medicines and previous surgery. He examines your skin and fat, takes measurements and standardised photographs, and discusses what you hope to change. You then receive a written plan setting out the procedure, areas, anaesthetic and staging, with the full price confirmed in writing.

What is the advanced consultation with ultrasound?

It is an in-clinic consultation with Dr Edwin Anthony that adds an ultrasound scan of the areas of concern. The scan shows the true thickness of fat under the skin, fat around the organs that liposuction cannot remove, and features such as separated stomach muscles. It costs £295 and suits complex cases, lipoedema and revision surgery.

How much do the consultations cost?

A video consultation costs £85, an in-clinic consultation £125, and the advanced consultation with ultrasound £295. Consultation fees are fixed and are not deducted from treatment prices. Procedure costs depend on your plan and are confirmed in writing afterwards; you can see our price list online for guidance. Finance through Chrysalis Finance is available.

Am I suitable for body contouring?

You are more likely to be suitable if you are 18 or over, in good general health, at or near a stable weight, with areas of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise, and reasonably firm skin. Body contouring is not weight loss. If your skin is very loose or your weight is still changing, we will say so.

Will I be awake during the procedure?

Micro Lipo and Vaser Lipo are usually carried out under local anaesthetic, so you are awake but comfortable. Vaser 4D Lipo and larger combined procedures are mainly done under IV sedation with local anaesthetic, which leaves you deeply relaxed without a general anaesthetic. The choice depends on the areas, the volume and your own preference.

Why might my treatment be split into stages?

Longer operations and combined procedures carry more risk. A large study of over 31,000 liposuction procedures found complications were several times more likely when liposuction was combined with other surgery. Splitting a big plan into two sessions can reduce time in theatre and the volume removed at once, and lets the first result guide the second.

What is the recovery after body contouring?

You go home the same day. Light activity is usually possible within 2 to 3 days, and most people return to desk work within about a week after larger procedures. Compression garments are worn for 4 to 6 weeks. The shape is largely visible by around 12 weeks, although some swelling can take several months to settle fully.

What are the risks of body contouring?

Bruising, swelling and temporary numbness are common. Less common risks include contour irregularity, fluid collection, infection, skin burns from energy devices and small entry scars. Serious complications such as blood clots are rare. A large study reported a major complication rate of 0.7% for liposuction alone. Your personal risks are discussed at consultation.

Will I have scars?

VASER procedures use tiny entry points, usually a few millimetres long, placed in natural creases where possible. They are often red at first and fade over months, becoming hard to see in most people. Healing varies, and people prone to raised or keloid scars should mention this at consultation so placement and aftercare can be adjusted.

Who performs body contouring at Contoura Medical?

Dr Edwin Anthony, Lead Clinician at Contoura Medical, GMC 4776646, personally performs every procedure. He trained at Trinity College Dublin, holds MRCS (Edinburgh), completed NHS plastic surgery and burns training and trained with Dr Alfredo Hoyos. He has carried out over 1,500 VASER procedures across 14 years at Langham Hospital, Marylebone.
