What Thermage FLX is and how it works
Thermage FLX is non-surgical. There are no cuts, no needles and no anaesthetic injections. A treatment tip is placed on the skin and delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy, which passes through the surface and heats the collagen-rich dermis and the fibrous layer beneath it.
The heat does two things. Existing collagen fibres contract, which gives a small immediate firming. Then, over the following months, the body lays down new collagen, and this is where most of the improvement comes from. The FLX system uses AccuREP technology, which reads the skin before each pulse and adjusts the energy, with cooling spray and vibration to keep you comfortable.
Thermage FLX Intense uses higher energy settings for more advanced laxity or larger body zones. At Contoura Medical, FLX Intense is doctor-led.
Who it suits, and who it does not
- Adults aged 18 and over at or near a stable weight
- Mild to moderate laxity of the jawline, neck, upper and lower eyelids or brow
- Crepey skin on the abdomen, arms, thighs, knees or buttocks
- People who want improvement without surgery and can accept a gradual, moderate result
It is not the right tool for heavy folds of loose skin after major weight loss, for fat that needs removing, or for deep sagging of the face. Thermage FLX is not a weight-loss treatment. We will tell you plainly if a minimally invasive option such as QuantumRF or surgery would serve you better. Please tell us about pacemakers or other electrical implants, pregnancy, and any serious health conditions.
Your treatment day at Langham Hospital
- Preparation. Make-up and jewellery are removed, photographs are taken and a temporary grid is marked on the skin so energy is spread evenly.
- Treatment. The tip is moved square by square. You feel short bursts of deep warmth with vibration and cooling. You tell us how hot each pass feels and settings are adjusted.
- Timing. Face and neck take around 45 to 60 minutes; larger body areas take up to about 90 minutes.
- Afterwards. Most people go straight back to work. For FLX Intense, stronger comfort measures or mild sedation may be used, and you would then need someone to take you home.
Recovery and results timeline

Results vary, and nobody can promise a particular outcome.
Risks and safety
Nothing breaks the skin, so the risks are lower than surgery, but not zero.

Can Thermage FLX treat the eyes?
Yes. A dedicated eye tip is used for the upper and lower eyelids and around the brow, with protective eye shields in place. It can soften crepey eyelid skin and mild hooding. It will not remove heavy excess eyelid skin or fat bags, which need surgery. Dr Edwin Anthony will examine you and explain what is realistic.
What are the risks of Thermage FLX?
Temporary redness, swelling and tenderness are common and settle quickly. Small tender bumps can appear and fade over days to weeks. Can Thermage FLX be combined with other treatments?
