VASER liposuction for the calves removes stubborn fat from the lower leg for a slimmer, more shapely calf and a clearer line down to the ankle. Dr Edwin Anthony performs every procedure personally at Langham Hospital, Marylebone, London.
Slimmer, more defined calves that suit the rest of your legs.
VASER liposuction for the calves removes fat that hides the natural curve of the lower leg, one of the areas that responds least to diet and exercise. Every procedure is planned and performed personally by Dr Edwin Anthony at Langham Hospital, 77 Hallam Street, Marylebone.
Is calf liposuction right for me?
You may be a good candidate if:
- ✓You are close to a stable weight but your calves stay full whatever you do
- ✓Your lower legs look straight or heavy, with little shape between calf and ankle
- ✓You have lipoedema and your calves are heavy, tender or out of proportion
- ✓The fullness is fat rather than muscle, and you have realistic expectations
How the procedure works
Consultation
Dr Anthony examines your legs, checks how much of the calf is fat rather than muscle and confirms you are suitable.
Treatment
Ultrasound energy loosens the fat, which is then gently removed through tiny incisions to reshape the calf and blend it into the ankle.
Recovery
You go home the same day in a compression garment, with scheduled follow up appointments.
Calves are often treated alongside the knees or ankles so the whole lower leg is shaped as one natural line. Most patients return to light daily activities within a few days, but the lower leg is the slowest area of the body to settle, and the final shape is seen at around six months.

Recovery after calf liposuction
Calf liposuction is usually done under local anaesthetic as a day case at Langham Hospital. You walk out of the hospital the same day wearing a compression garment. Because the lower legs sit below the heart, swelling lasts longer here than in most other areas.
- Days 1 to 3: regular short walks help circulation, with the legs raised when resting. Some leakage of tinted fluid from the tiny entry points is normal.
- Week 1: most patients return to desk work within about a week. Walking is encouraged, but long periods of standing can make the ankles swell.
- Weeks 2 to 6: compression is worn for around six weeks, sometimes longer. Swelling around the ankles is expected and gentle exercise is reintroduced gradually.
- Months 3 to 6: the new calf shape becomes steadily clearer as the last of the swelling settles. The final result is judged at around six months.
Keeping your legs moving, raising them when resting and wearing the garment as advised all help swelling settle evenly. Dr Anthony reviews you after surgery and again as the result matures. If you are unsure whether fat or muscle is the main cause, an advanced consultation with ultrasound can measure fat thickness before you decide.
Risks worth understanding
All liposuction carries risk, even in a hospital setting. The most common effects are bruising, swelling and temporary numbness. Less common problems include contour irregularity, seroma, infection, prolonged swelling around the ankles and, rarely, blood clots. The skin over the calf is thin, so a careful, even approach matters more than the amount removed.
Calf liposuction will not reduce muscle or change the shape of the bones, and it works best when the thighs and knees are in proportion. Some patients treat the knees and ankles at the same time for a smoother line; see VASER liposuction and our price list. Consultation fees are fixed and are not deducted from treatment prices.
Frequently asked questions
Can calf fat be removed with diet and exercise?
Fat on the lower leg is very diet resistant, and in lipoedema it does not respond to weight loss at all. Exercise can build the calf muscle but does not remove the fat layer over it. Liposuction removes the fat cells directly.
When will I see the final result after calf liposuction?
Calves take longer to settle than most areas because swelling collects in the lower leg. You will see an improvement within a few weeks, but the final result is judged at around six months.
Will the fat come back after calf liposuction?
Fat cells that are removed do not return. Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain, so a stable weight helps keep the result.
Can liposuction make muscular calves smaller?
No. Liposuction only removes fat. If the size of the calf is mainly muscle, liposuction will make little difference, and Dr Anthony will tell you this honestly at consultation.
Can calves be treated with the ankles or knees?
Yes. Calves are frequently treated with the ankles and knees so the lower leg is shaped as one line, and this is common in lipoedema treatment. Dr Anthony will advise how many areas can be safely treated in one session.
How much does VASER liposuction for the calves cost?
VASER liposuction starts from £2,800 for one area, with finance available. See our prices page for full details. You will receive a written quote after consultation.
